Cataracts in Pets

Humans often develop cataracts, a clouding of the lens of the eyes, as they age. Animals can also have cataracts, which can affect their ability to see well enough to function. Cataracts can be removed surgically so pets can see again. At Unleashed Pet Care in Livonia, MI, we provide surgical procedures to restore the vision of pets with cataracts.

Why Do Cataracts Form?

Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, which impedes the reflection of light onto the retina at the back of the eye. This cloudiness can progress until the eye begins to look visibly obscured and can begin to interfere with vision, which can be hazardous for the animal. Aging and exposure to ultraviolet light are factors that can cause cataracts. Diabetes can hasten the development of cataracts. Untreated inflammation or infection of the eyes can also contribute to the development of cataracts.

Symptoms of Cataracts in Pets

You may not notice any change in your pet’s eyes in the early stages of cataract development. However, cataracts become progressively worse, and you will eventually begin to notice that your pet’s eyes don’t look as clear and bright as they once did. As time passes, the cloudiness worsens and begins to obscure vision. Your dog may sniff around more before finding a treat on the floor. Your cat may not be able to jump onto elevated surfaces.

Surgery For Cataracts in Pets

Our vet will use specialized equipment to detect cataracts in your pet’s eyes. If they are found, surgery will be scheduled. Your pet will be given a variety of tests to ensure he or she is healthy enough to undergo the procedure. The animal will be anesthetized and the lens of the eye will be removed. An artificial lens is then implanted to replace it. Recovery occurs quickly for this procedure. You will be given eye drops to administer, to prevent infection. A follow-up visit to the vet to ensure good healing is usually scheduled.
