Skin Problems in Pets
Here are some of the most common skin problems that pets have:
- Pruritis (Itching)
- Dry skin
- Bald patches
- External parasites
- Dermatitis (hot spots)
These skin problems can happen for a variety of reasons, from environmental and/or food allergies to parasites. In some cases, your pet could simply have a different skin type that needs specific care.
Symptoms of Skin Problems in Pets
Our pets cannot tell us what is wrong so, we have to communicate with their body language and behavior.
Common symptoms include:
- Constant scratching (pruritis)
- Rashes or dry skin spots
- Hair loss
- Frequent irritation and restlessness
Pet Dermatology From A Veterinarian
Skin infections and allergy flare ups can worsen if gone untreated, so it is important to see your primary care veterinarian as soon as possible. We do offer allergy testing through the Veterinary Allergy Reference Laboratory if necessary.
Please be aware that while we can treat many skin conditions, our veterinarians are NOT dermatology specialists and if all routes of treatment and diagnostics have been used, we will refer you to a dermatology specialist.
