Pet Seizures

Signs of a Pet Seizure

You may always think that uncontrollable shaking or convulsing is the way to spot a seizure, but it's not always the case. For example, focal or psychomotor seizures have different signs, such as repeated odd behaviors. Other symptoms of pet seizures include:

  • Unsteady walking or balance
  • Excessive drool or foaming at the mouth
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Loss of bodily functions
  • Shaking, jerking, or twitching
  • Repetition of unusual behaviors
  • Underlying causes like a pet ear infection

Your pet may try to hide or have difficulty walking after a seizure.

During a Seizure

The most important thing during a pet seizure is to remain calm. It's always challenging because you are worried about your pet's health and safety. There is no need to restrain your pet, and seizures are usually over in a few minutes. Remember to secure the area, track the episodes, avoid going near their month, and contact a veterinarian from our office immediately. Our team is available for rapid intervention.

Pet Seizure Treatment

We will usually begin treatment if your pet has suffered from more than one seizure. A veterinarian from our team will examine your pet and run different tests to determine the cause of the seizures. Any underlying causes can be treated with other medications that we can prescribe. The follow-up visits to our office will depend on what type of medication we prescribe and how your pet responds.

Keeping Track of Seizures

We recommend keeping a log if your pet has recurring seizures. You can track it at home, and share the information on your follow-up visits. Contact our office if you notice that the seizures are worsening.
