Are you thinking about getting your cat fixed? At Unleashed Pet Care in Livonia, MI, we want our cat moms and dads to be fully informed about their pet's healthcare, including spaying and neutering.

Why Spaying or Neutering Your Cat is Beneficial

Did you know that getting your cat fixed could increase its lifespan and reduce the risk of certain cancers? It's true! Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian cancer in females and reduces the risk of prostate cancer in male cats.

Moreover, your cat is much less likely to wander off after the procedure. Without the urge to roam, your cat is less likely to be injured in street fights or accidents away from home. Fixing your cat also helps control the stray animal population. Once fixed, your cat won't add to the burden shelters and rescue organizations bear for unhomed cats.

Preparing for the Procedure

It's important that your cat fast the evening before the procedure. An empty stomach is safer for your cat when under anesthesia. Also, bring a comfortable carrier so your pet is safe and cozy during transportation between your home and our office. Most of all, don't worry—our team loves animals! We'll care for your cat like our own, showing them nurturing and compassionate care.

During the Procedure

Your cat will receive anesthesia and sleep through the entire procedure without pain or discomfort. Next, the veterinarian will make a small incision in the abdomen (females) or near the scrotum (males). The vet will gently remove the reproductive organs (ovaries and uterus in females; testicles in males) and then carefully stitch closed the small incision. We carefully monitor vital signs during the procedure to ensure your cat rests comfortably.

Post-Operative Care and Recovery

It's important to closely monitor your pet during the first 24 hours of recovery to manage pain and prevent infection. We prescribe appropriate pain medication for your pet's needs to keep them comfortable. After discharge, keep your cat indoors, preferably in a quiet, comfortable location so they can recover in a stress-free environment. We also recommend dust-free litter while the incisions heal to minimize dust and the chance of infection.
