What Is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke is another name for elevated body temperature. It is a life-threatening condition whereby your pet becomes too hot—above 104°F (40°C), resulting in heavy panting. Dogs and cats have few sweat glands compared to humans. Therefore, heatstroke overheats the pet and increases its heartbeat.

What Are the Main Signs of Heatstroke?

Panting is the main sign which continues to increase as the heatstroke rises. Other signs include pale gums, red tongue, restlessness, diarrhea, vomiting, agitation, and restlessness. Take your dog to a veterinarian immediately whenever your dog heats and shows any of these signs.

Is a Pet’s Heatstroke the Same as Human Heatstroke?

Heatstroke in pets and humans is similar because the signs are almost the same. The only difference is that humans can easily escape the condition through first aid techniques.

Pets entirely depend on their owners for help. Besides, pets have fewer sweat glands than humans, so the condition is more severe in pets. Pet owners should watch their pet's temperature keenly and take immediate action in case of temperature change.

How Can I Help a Pet With Heatstroke?

The best action is to take the pet to a veterinarian for assessment. However, you can observe a few practices to save the dog from worrying side effects. A few things that you can do include:

  • Taking the dog to a shaded area
  • Giving it cold water
  • Pouring some cold water on its body

You should also prevent the pet from strenuous activity and allow it to rest for a few minutes.

How Can I Prevent Heatstroke in Pets?

Allow your pet to rest when tired, and limit its movements when it's sunny. Don't leave your pet alone in an enclosed area, such as in a car. Ensure the pet has quick access to a shady environment and watch its weight. Pets with excess weight tend to experience more cases of heatstroke. Lastly, keep your pet's fur cut during summer to prevent overheating.
